Why You Should Give Mountain Biking a Try

May 21, 2018

The mountains in Park City are an amazing place to go exploring.  The wildflower season is right around the corner and getting up close and personal with the amazing colors and smells of the summer is spectacular.  Many people often think of hiking as a great way to discover the mountains; however, mountain biking is a great way to see more of what the mountains have to offer.  Here are some of my favorite reasons to give mountain biking a spin.

  1. A new kind of fit

One of the most obvious reasons to give mountain biking a whirl is the amazing work out.  Biking in general is great Female mountain biker carrying her bicycle in the forest on a sunny dayfor your heart health, and it really gives you a full body workout.  Not only does it work out your lower body tremendously, it works your upper biceps and triceps as well.  Mountain biking is also great for working on your balance.  As you progress, technical spots and tough switch backs will make you work both mentally and physically to keep you on your bike.  This kind of biking lends itself to be more of a full body workout as opposed to more traditional road biking.

  1. Mental Game

For many, starting in the mountain biking world can be a bit intimidating.  However, keep in mind there are many beginner trails and often clinics that can get you in the right mindset to tackle the trails.  One of the great perks to mountain biking is it totally requires your brain to be completely present in the moment.  Your mind does not really have much ability to think of anything else accept the trial while biking technical spots.  It is like a mental escape from the daily grind of life when you are on your bike.  Choosing how to safely go about technical sections will keep your mind constantly engaged, making it pretty hard to think about other things going on in your life.  For many, that mental escape is enough to get out and ride.

  1. Did I mention the scenery?

Do not get me wrong, I love hiking, but biking lets you get to so many more places.Cascades and walking bridge over the Oconaluftee River, at Great Smoky Mountains National Park, North Carolina.  You can cover more ground in a much shorter period of time, plus the reward at the top of a tough climb is somehow more rewarding while pedaling.  Once the wildflowers really start to bloom, there is something extra special about whizzing through them while on your bike.

  1. Camaraderie

Biking with friends is awesome.  There is something extra bonding about an intense ride that brings you closer to those you share the trail with.  Maybe it is that little extra bit of danger, or maybe it’s the ever so important celebratory beers at the end of a long ride that brings you closer together.  Whatever it is though, friends you make and go exploring with while biking is something completely special.

Yes, I admit, getting on a mountain bike at the beginning is a challenge.  But the lasting memories, the great workout, and the amazing relationships you will build will totally outweigh those thoughts.  Give it a spin! You might surprise yourself with a new found sense for adventure and challenge.
